Installation of a new cable barrier system in the median of I-85 is expected to start this week.
The Georgia Department of Transportation is installing a cable barrier system along I-85, from S.R. 20 in Gwinnett County, through Barrow, Jackson and Banks counties, to the Franklin County line.
The cable barrier system is a safety project designed to help prevent crossover accidents where a vehicle traveling in one direction crosses the median and strikes a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction. In some areas, standard guardrail will be installed as well.
The project will require only shoulder closures. No through lanes will be closed.
This week, the shoulder closures will be just north of S.R. 20 in Gwinnett County on the northbound and southbound inside (left) shoulders.
The project has a completion date of April 30, 2009, and the cost is just over $6.5 million.
