Describe your background:
I am from Knoxville, Tenn.; was educated at The University of West Florida, Pensacola, Fla. in Pre-law, and earned an MBA (Managerial Leadership) at Piedmont College, Demorest, GA. I am an involved parent and mentor. I mentored with Barrow County Schools last year and was also involved with Barrow County Communities in Schools.
•If the E-SPLOST referendum fails, will you vote for a property tax increase to service the school system’s debt?
No, I do not believe the referendum will fail because voting parents understand the necessity and importance of this sales tax.
•What are your plans to deal with budget constraints in a way that will preserve quality instruction for Barrow students?
My plans to deal with budget constraints and preserve quality instruction for our students are to:
-Look at each line item and decide which programs are non-essential and can be eliminated
-Investigate moving toward 4-day work weeks ( Similar to what Lanier Technical College has implemented)
-Halt the reduction of Teaching Faculty
•What are the three biggest issues that Barrow County Schools must address over the next five years?
-Growth – Barrow County is one of the fastest growing counties. The decision concerning what to do with the expected influx of students will need to be addressed.
-Testing Scores – Our students have low percentages in the Meet/Exceeds categories for Math, Science and Social Studies
-Maintaining Quality Educators – Keeping Barrow County’s School District attractive to talent may entail decreasing furlough days and teacher lay-offs, which will directly affect student teacher ratio.
-Increasing Parental Involvement – This is an ongoing movement and one of the main keys to our students’ success.
