Career/occupation:
Retired sheriff
Describe your background:
Business owner and Sheriff for 20 years, deputy 4 years.
•Given the current economic difficulties, what would you propose trimming from the budget and why?
All elected officials promise to be good stewards and be physically responsible for their office. The Barrow County budget is your money, the taxpayers. Elected officials should spend it wisely! One of Barrow County’s greatest assets is its employees. I would want the input of the different offices and department heads to be involved in ways we can trim off some of their budget. We all have to be willing to take some serious cuts to streamline our county’s budget while maintaining the quality of services we provide to citizens. People are losing their houses because of the economy and unable to pay their taxes.
I promise to be a good steward of your money.
•What are the three biggest issues that Barrow County must address over the next five years?
We must get our budget in line and control spending.
We have got to survive this recession by everyone working together and doing their part. No one knows how long it will last.
We have to stop some of the red tape to help attract small business and industry, to give local contractors the opportunity to bid that help create jobs and take some tax relief from the homeowners.
•What new services, if any, do you propose if elected to office? How do you propose to pay for this service?
This is OUR COUNTY. As a lifelong citizen of this wonderful county, I take great pride in our county and government; I think it is time to see all the commissioners work together AND with each elected official and department head. I think we, as citizens, need to get involved by volunteering our time and services to the rec. dept., any office and departments where we can. This will not add cost for our county and we can continue to preserve this wonderful county.
I think we need to stop a lot of red tape in our government, such as having to get a permit for everything we do.
I am retired and have time to devote to OUR County.
•Do you support hiring a county administrator to manage the day to day operations of county government? Why or why not?
I am in favor of an assistant, not an administrator to help the chairman to do some of the leg work (but) not run the county, which is why we elect a chairman to answer to the board and citizens.
