Career/occupation:
Semi-retired National Accounts Coordinator
Describe your background:
30 years of Strategic Marketing and Operational Management experience, including Finance, Transportation Logistics, and Management Work Force Training and Development.
•If the E-SPLOST referendum fails, will you vote for a property tax increase to service the school system’s debt?
I do not support adding more taxation to an already overburdened taxpaying population here in Barrow County, due to the current lingering recession. Our families simply can’t absorb any more taxes, so I believe that alternative outside investment options must be considered as a viable cost effective alternative to offset our current budget deficit.
•What are your plans to deal with budget constraints in a way that will preserve quality instruction for Barrow students?
My campaign has undertaken a leadership role in asking our Georgia Legislature to begin bipartisan discussions on independent outside investment in both Barrow County and state Education programs, to return profitability to the Education system without relying mainly on the “TAX BOX,” as a never ending crutch. This approach will preserve the operational financial integrity of the system, as well as forging a positive growth curve for the future student generations to come. In addition, I have spoken with several Republican candidates who are running for various state offices, about this issue, and they have all indicated that the “TAX BOX” in Georgia is full, and we must at the very least, begin discussions on alternative investment options. My campaign has asked for a meeting with Gov. Perdue, to discuss this important issue, in the near future. Barrow County, and the State of Georgia, MUST look to the FUTURE for its collective prosperity and growth, and I submit to the citizens and parents of Barrow County, that our CHILDREN ARE OUR FUTURE!
•What are the three biggest issues that Barrow County Schools must address over the next five years?
1.) First, I believe that sound fundamental financial management of all of our resources and assets must be a top priority for the Board. Besides stringent operational controls that include front line management accountability, we must move beyond the simple standard accounting basics, and include a strategic marketing plan to attract outside independent investment in the Barrow County School System, which will bolster and support existing state tax based revenues and strategic reserve finances, to prepare for unexpected economic downturns, such as the recession that we are now experiencing. I believe that we as an education community, must never again be unprepared to deal with a downturn in the economy. This external investment option will allow our system to grow and expand, especially in the expensive education technology sector, which is a vital component necessary to meet what will surely be the future challenges for our schools to compete in an ever evolving competitive global environment.
2.) Second, we must as a county be able to attract, hire and retain top level certified classroom instructors, to ensure a superior execution of the curriculum standards of our education system here in Barrow County, as well as encourage more of our graduating high school students to seek educational related degrees, to continue the “cycle of excellence” for the future benefit of our education community.
3.) Third, we must take greater measures to protect our Music and Arts Programs, which have seen some unprecedented budget cuts in other counties across the state.
Music and Arts Programs have proven time and time again, to be excellent curriculum's for interpersonal student skill level experiences, that allows each student that participates, to experience just how important being part of a team is, as well as building personal self esteem, and positive image projection for future employment in an ever demanding jobs market.
My vision for Barrow County Schools is that it will become the leader in education excellence, and pave the way for all Barrow County Students to have the opportunity to reach each one of their personal dreams and goals for their lives. There is no greater goal for my campaign than to protect the hopes and dreams for all of the kids here in Barrow County. I hope those of you that share that vision, will help me reach that goal by voting for me on July 20th 2010.
