•If the E-SPLOST referendum fails, will you vote for a property tax increase to service the school system’s debt?
NO!!! I did not vote for a tax increase during my 8 years of service on the BOE and would not consider doing that now. There are other alternative methods for funding, for instance like the Gates foundation grant I helped the BOE receive during my time on the BOE.
•What are your plans to deal with budget constraints in a way that will preserve quality instruction for Barrow students?
First thing would be to stop trying to push special interest projects that have nothing to do with the Education of our children. With the current budget situation we do not have time nor the finances to try and force special interest projects that a majority of students have no interest in. We have to go back to our main role on the BOE and that is making sure we give the students of Barrow County the best education possible, while using our tax dollars in the most effective manner.
•What are the three biggest issues that Barrow County Schools must address over the next five years?
When I left the BOE three and a half years ago, our Test scores were up, all our schools had made AYP, our graduation rate was up and the drop out rate was down.
1. Reverse the decline in our gradation rate and get our drop out rate going back down.
2. Work to get our test scores back to where they belong and all our schools making AYP.
3. Work to get our spending controlled and to find alternative funding so we can work within our budget.
Unfortunately, since I have been off the BOE things are completely reversed. We need to get back focusing on our main goal and that is the education of all the children in Barrow County. We owe every child the opportunity to develop at their full potential academically. We have to get the focus back on Education and away from pet projects that have taken that focus away. If elected, I promise I will be doing everything to make sure we open the doors of learning to all children in Barrow county and that as taxpayers you will be assured that your tax dollars are being spent in an efficient and wise manner. Over the next 5 years experience will play a key role in getting Barrow County back on track and I look forward to the challenge and the opportunity to serve the community which my children have grown up in and that I have a passion to serve in.
