After crunching the numbers for weeks, months even, the Barrow County Board of Education officially passed its fiscal year 2011 budget Tuesday night.
By the time Tuesday night’s meeting arrived, there wasn’t much left to be discussed.
“I think we’ve beat this horse to death,” board member Lynn Stevens said. “Let’s vote.”
The budget passed by a 7-1 vote with Dan Cromer voting in opposition. Member Larry Ballard was not in attendance.
The FY 2011 budget will have expenditures of $90,742,855 with anticipated revenues of $89,184,154.
In other business at Tuesday’s meeting, the BOE was informed the most recent Educational Local Option Sales Tax receipt was for approximately $671,000, an increase of approximately $20,000 from the previous month.
Assistant superintendent for finance Ken Cato was pleased with the figures.
“We are seeing a decline in revenue across the state, but in Barrow County we are holding steady,” Cato said. “It has been a pretty good month for us and the county.”
One bid was received for the Highland House property which the board has declared as surplus property. The Tree House offered a bid of $85,000 which superintendent Wanda Creel recommended not accepting.
A brief update was given on the progress of repairs at the Winder-Barrow High School athletic fieldhouse.
Due to the July 4 holiday, the regular meeting for July will be Thursday.
Ms. Stevens comment about "beating this horse to death" and then just passing the budget makes me wonder ..... How many other things were just passed without REALLY being worked out?
I think it's time for new members on the board. I've listened to the candidates and I think some of the challengers have what it takes.
We need to vote in:
Twiss (district 1)
Dunn (district 4)
Sullivan (district 7)
They are younger, fresher, with newer ideas. All three would be great assets to the board.
