Journal wins 11 GPA newspaper awards

Columnist Lorin Sinn-Clark won third place for Best Serious Column.

Brown’s first-place photos included an action picture from an Apalachee High School football scrimmage and a scene from Barrow County’s troop sendoff. She also took second for a feature photograph and third place for a photo essay titled “Across the countryside” and a sports feature photograph of Apalachee High School football coach Shane Davis.

Brown is believed to be the youngest BNC contest winner ever.

In addition to the BNC contest, Buffington was honored by the association with two awards for fighting for a more open government in Georgia. He was given the David Hudson Open Government Award for years of work in the area of open government and was also honored in the Journal’s sister newspaper, The Jackson Herald, with the GPA Freedom of Information Award for his fight to shed light on the Pendergrass City Council and its secret meetings.

“These awards are the result of the hard work of our entire staff,” Bridges said. “We are a team that has been in place since our first edition. It is always nice to be recognized by your peers.”

The Journal was also recently honored by the Georgia Sportswriters Association for its coverage of Barrow County sports.
