James Cantrell, Director of Pupil Transportation for the Barrow County School System, has resigned his position effective June 30.
Barrow County Superintendent Wanda Creel said Cantrell resigned to “pursue other interests.”
“He is going to take annual leave beginning tomorrow (June 15) through the end of the month,” Creel said Monday.
The superintendent also said the system had two bus drivers who were assisting the transportation department beyond their bus driver hours and being paid on a time sheet on an hourly basis.
“These drivers have not been relieved of their bus driver duties,” Creel said.
Cantrell’s resignation letter, provided to the
Barrow Journal, reads in whole:
“Dear Dr. Creel: “I appreciate the opportunity to have worked with the Barrow County School System. At this time I have decided to pursue other opportunities. My resignation will be effective June 30, 2010. I will take annual leave beginning June 15, 2010 until the remainder of the month of June.”
These women are no different than we are they just knew how to use the county to get what they wanted. I know alot of people working hard everyday with alot more to offer and they will do alot better job. Maybe things will be done fairly since we must have somebody that cares
Thanks to the knew Super T for seeing this.
Thank you Dr. Cantrell and best of luck to you
you hit the nail on the head! Everything revolves around politics and who you know. Time for a county overhaul.
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing
Enough already. Please stop this mudslinging. It may have made some people upset that other folks made what may have been viewed as too much pay for the job they were doing, but personal attacks are uncalled for here.
The employees in question were not doing anything to get any special favors; they just got paid extra (at driver pay rate) to do some extra work in the office, and the work that one of them did can be difficult. Who couldn't use extra money? I know that if I were capable of performing office tasks, and the opportunity arose for me to make extra pay doing so, I would. What's wrong with that?
Further, if these driver/office workers were doing something unethical to maintain their extra pay positions, then they must have been doing it when our former director (God rest her soul) was in charge, as well, because the two employees that you people keep speaking so poorly of were working in the office off and on before Dr. Cantrell came here. Personal feelings aside, the truth is, one of these driver/office workers was performing many important clerical tasks, and it will be difficult for the remaining staff members to assume her duties on top of the many duties that they already have.It will also be a bit unfair to them to have all of the extra work suddenly piled on them.
I do agree that all county positions whether part time or full time should be posted, but this is a practice that has gone on for a long time within the department, and Cantrell actually did post all open positions in the department. There is good in everyone, and he did a fine job making sure that all positions were posted.
Also, please try to remember that the rest of the county is looking at these forums, and they are getting the wrong idea about the department. It is not at all as bad as some of you would want the public to think, and I just don't understand why you would want people to think so poorly of the department.
We have a new Superintendent, and she will make the changes within all departments that she deems necessary. Along the way there will likely be people who are happy with the changes that Dr. Creel implements, and there will be those who are unhappy, but it will be alright.
In closing, I would like to say that there are two sides to every story, and both sides may have some valid points, but we all just need to move on. And for goodness sake, let's try to be nice and work together.
One more quick thing, and please don't think I am trying to be mean, but please, let's all try to proof read our posts. We all make grammatical errors with punctuation & such every now and then, but when we post here, others read it, and it makes bus drivers appear to be illiterate when we fail to check our subject-verb agreement.
Also, please don't try to call me out by name here, because none of you would ever be able to guess who this is. Besides, that sort of behavior is silly, and our drivers are professionals.
:)
I think you might be a bit confused about how much bus drivers make. Drivers are paid well for driving our precious cargo to and from school each day. The employee that made over 40 k was being paid at her driver hourly rate rather than a clerical rate of pay and that is why she made so much. At the risk of getting into trouble if someone finds out who I am, I will share that after about ten years on the job as a bus driver in Barrow County, a driver will make an average of $18 an hour (give or take a little). This rate is based upon a 4 hour day, for 180 days per year and then dividing the salary paid over the course of 12 months by the hours actually worked to get the approximate hourly rate. The driver who did office work and was paid the 40 k has been a driver for much longer than 10 years, and keep in mind that she was being paid at her driving rate. I only say this in order to clarify that drivers are paid well.
I think that the real issue here is whether or not there should have been a separate rate of pay for the office time that was being worked. Job performance isn't really an issue, in my opinion. The work that at least the one employee performed was tedious and time consuming, and I do not believe that all she did was sit around and ride the clock. I personally saw her doing payroll, trip requests, and time sheets. Further, she did not set the rate of pay, the boss did. She came in and did her job as instructed and was paid in accordance to the rate that the bosses (both of our previous directors) set the pay. We shouldn't be so hard on the employees here; let's be hard on the person who set the pay rate to be the driving hourly rate rather than an office rate.
To get back to the subject of driver hourly rates, I honestly do not know what the starting rate is for our drivers, but I know that when I started here, it was 12.48 on average, so it is likely much more now. The drivers get raises every year, so we honestly make a fairly good hourly rate, and yes, we deserve it :) (I appreciate you thinking that we are valuable employees, because alot of parents do not feel that way).
I am not taking sides(I am playing devil's advocate here), as I strongly feel that there is no need to do so, and if people knew more of the facts rather than only rumors, they may not be so angry at the employees.
Also, please keep in mind that I am not with holding my name because I am ashamed of my opinions. I just don't know if I would get into trouble for posting job related issues in a public forum, and I really love my job driving our county's children.
Due to my lack of time to socialize with the other drivers,I really have absolutely no idea what one of the posts is talking about when referring to "affairs," nor do I want to know. I just want everyone to try to understand that it is not really neccessary for us to be so mean to one another. Mudslinging, in my personal definition, includes things that are untrue and things that might be true. To me, mudslinging is slinging around the dirt that one has on another person, and yes, at times some of it may be true, but even if it is, it's still not neccessary (in my opinion). We all have to work together, right? :)
I love my job, and I have worked under two directors and four assistants, and regardless of who runs things we always get the job done for the county, so I believe we will be okay. I am the type of employee who works for my pay under whoever happens to be in charge at the time, so it's no skin off my back if Cantrell is in charge or a new director. I just think that we shouldn't call out lower level employees by name in a public forum and try to defame them. I try to think about how I would feel if the shoe were on my foot and folks were talking about me in a public forum. I guess that makes me sympathetic to both sides. I like the people I work with, all of them, even the ones that everyone is speaking so poorly of. I hate seeing this sort of conflict between my co-workers.
This is my last post on this; I promise. I am sure you are all sick of reading my opinions.
Please understand that I do not wish to offend anyone with my words. I really appreciate all of my co workers (from the mechanics to the office to the drivers)and the hard work that we all put in for this county. I just don't think that we should demonize the employees mentioned above.
Ya'll have a nice summer, really (I am being sincere, not sarcastic. I know it can be hard to tell on a blog if someone is being sarcastic, but I'm not), and we will all see eachother in August. :)
Let's make a point to set aside the differences we have with others and have a great school year next year. :)
Especially if you're not brave enough to use your own.
