Dear Editor:
I am disgusted over the conduct of the Board of the Winder-Barrow Industrial Building Authority.
LETTER: Have our local leaders lost their minds?

I've been wondering when someone in Barrow County would suggest voting down "SPLOST."

Why is it with all of the cut backs that the Maintenance Personnel of Barrow County Schools all 18 employees ( This number does not include the Director or the Assistant Directors of Maintenance) made well over 770,000 dollars in 2009 and are being allowed to drive their county vehicle’s home daily as far away as Dahlonega And Hart County Ga. Some might say it is because they are on call but if one person is on call do they all need to drive there county vehicle’s home? Hartwell is 74 miles one way for a round trip that would be 148 miles a day x 236 days a year = 34,928 miles a year divide by 23 miles per gal (avg miles per gallon for a vehicle) =1518 gals of gas x $2.50 = $3796.00 per vehicle. Will SPLOST pay their excessive pay (770,000.00 plus) or the cost of the use of a county vehicle to drive home?

I was on call when I worked in the private sector, and lived 32 miles away from my job, but I had to drive my own vehicle that I paid for. Now if the Barrow County schools are not educating the children of Barrow County well enough to go on to college and learn the type of work these out of countians do, what might their purpose be? I might see a need for cops to drive their patrol cars home, but still have a question as to the integrity of that, as well. Other than that, no government employee should be allowed to drive a government vehicle home.
