A bi-polar man brutally attacked his wife last week and forced her to pray for the “almighty President Obama.”
The victim said she was sleeping when she heard the doorbell ring. Before she could get out of bed, she heard a knock at her bedroom window. The woman looked out and saw her husband, John Stephen Zuro, 35, of 351 Kay Drive in Winder, standing outside. Zuro held up his arm and showed the victim a wristband from Barrow Regional Medical Center.
Zuro said he had gone to the hospital to seek help like the victim had asked and wanted to talk with her. The victim agreed to speak with him and walked outside the residence.
Once outside, Zuro demanded to know why the victim had not been answering her phone. The victim explained that her phone battery was dead and was charging in her car. Zuro went to the car, retrieved the phone and insisted that his wife listen to the voice messages he had left her.
After listening to the messages, the victim realized her husband had not received psychiatric help, only sleeping medications. When the victim told her husband that she wanted him to get more help, he grabbed her by the neck and began to choke her. The victim said Zuro released the pressure on her neck just before she lost consciousness and told her, “You need to see the light of everything I have tried to tell you.”
Despite the victim’s pleas to stop, Zuro dragged her to the street and forced her to her knees. As Zuro was holding her by the back of her neck, the victim said she secretly dialed 911 trying to get help. Zuro forced the victim to repeat a prayer. In the prayer, the victim was forced to say words about “the almighty President Obama.”
After approximately ten minutes, Zuro allowed the victim to stand up and made her walk to his truck. Zuro said he wanted the victim to listen to a Tupac song.
Zuro then forced the victim to her knees again and said he wanted her to apologize for saying that she hated him. After she apologized, Zuro slapped her twice in the face and forced her to perform oral sex. Afterwards, Zuro said he should be able to have sex with her any way he wanted. The victim said she became fearful of what Zuro intended to do and began to act as nice and agreeable as possible in the hopes she could escape.
Eventually, Zuro let the victim get up off the ground and left to go to Walgreens.
The victim went inside the residence, woke her brother and asked him to call authorities.
Barrow County deputies were later able to locate Zuro at his residence and placed him under arrest.
Zuro was charged with aggravated sodomy, public indecency, family violence battery, kidnapping, simple battery, false imprisonment and aggravated assault.
Last week, Auburn Police also arrested one other person for domestic violence. Angela M. Gonzales, 31, of 215 Hickory Trace in Auburn, was charged with family violence battery, simple battery and criminal trespass in connection with a May 29 domestic dispute.
