Man strikes friend with hammer

According to the victim, he and Mearlon Knight, 67, of 132 Anita Drive, began arguing at Knight’s house. The victim said Knight asked him to leave the property and the victim was attempting to do so when Knight attacked him.

The victim said he was in his truck attempting to back out of the drive when Knight struck him in the arm with a claw hammer. The victim was treated at the scene for a raised, red mark on his left forearm.

Knight claimed the victim started the argument and threatened to “whip his ass.” When the victim made this threat, Knight admitted telling the victim that he was going to get his gun. Knight said he warned the victim that he should leave.

At that point, the victim grabbed an armful of his belongings and walked outside. The two continued to argue as the victim walked to his truck. Knight confessed to grabbing a hammer and striking the victim in the arm.

Knight also advised the deputy that if the victim returned to his house, he would kill him.

Knight was transported to the Barrow County Detention Center and charged with aggravated assault and simple assault.

The hammer was placed into evidence.
