Firefighters called to a two-car accident Thursday found a car in flames, but no drivers and no passengers.
Just before midnight on May 27, communication officers received numerous phone calls reporting a motor vehicle collision on Matthew School Road near Lloyd Blakely Road.
Barrow Ladder 7 and Med 7 responded to the scene. Firefighters found a BMW lying on its side in the ditch and a Dodge Charger that was in the woods further down the road.
The Charger was heavily involved in fire.
“The fire was quickly brought under control by firefighters,” Dakin said. “None of the occupants from either vehicle were found at the scene of the accident.”
According to the Fire Investigation Team, the vehicle fire was the result of the collision.
Home damaged after stove left unattended
A Thorton Street home sustained minor damage after a fire ignited in the kitchen.
Barrow County Emergency Services public information officer Lt. Scott Dakin said first arriving crews found light smoke throughout the home.
“Crews found the fire had been extinguished prior to their arrival,” Dakin said. “They found the fire had damaged the stove, vent hood and surrounding cabinets.”
Barrow Engines 1 and 6, Med 6 and Battalion 1 were dispatched to the May 27 call.
Due to damage to the electrical wiring in the home, power to the residence was cut. Investigators determined the fire started after residents left food unattended on a stove.
“We want to remind citizens that they need to stay in the kitchen when cooking,” said Dakin. “They also need to make sure they shut off all elements of the stove when finished cooking.”
