An 82-year-old woman escaped injury when her Winder home was firebombed earlier this week.
Eldonia Watson, a wheelchair bound great-great-grandmother, was asleep inside her Elm Street residence when someone threw a flaming Molotov cocktail onto her front porch.
Watson’s son Eddie was still awake when the incident occurred around 2 a.m. Monday morning.
Eddie Watson told Winder Police he heard a loud bang which he initially thought was thunder. When he looked outside, he saw the porch was on fire. According to the police report, he and family friend Timothy Mayweather used kitchen pots to keep the flames under control until the Winder Fire Department arrived.
Winder Police located the remnants of the incendiary device and have reportedly instituted round the clock neighborhood patrols while they attempt to locate the perpetrator.
Neither Eddie Watson nor Mayweather witnessed the incident, but Mayweather reported hearing a loud car engine in the vicinity.
Watson told Atlanta’s Fox 5 news that he also heard something immediately after the Molotov cocktail hit the house.
“The porch is on fire and someone takes off running and they say, 'Go, go, go’,'" Watson said.
Lt. Frank Farr of the Winder Police Department confirmed that investigators have identified more than one suspect in the firebombing.
“We have a couple of good suspects, but they’re not ready to arrest them at this time,” he said.
Farr said though the motive for firebombing is unclear, he does not believe Eldonia Watson was the intended victim.
“None of our leads have shown that she would have been a target,” Farr said.
The incident remains under investigation.
