The Georgia State Patrol is investigating a fatal accident which occurred Sunday morning on Highway 316 at its intersection with Hwy. 53.
Just after 7 a.m., Larry Brian Townsend, 30, of Bogart was attempting to make a left turn onto Hwy. 316 from Hwy. 53 when his 2000 Dodge Avenger was struck by an eastbound Volvo driven by Shakena Daniel, 20, of Statham.
Townsend was killed when the Volvo struck the driver’s side door of his vehicle. Daniel was treated at the scene for minor injuries and released.
The accident resulted in the temporary closure of all lanes of Hwy. 316.
Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright said the crash is currently under investigation by the Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team.
Investigators plan to interview witnesses to determine which driver had the green light at the intersection, Wright said. No charges have yet been filed.
The accident marks the second serious accident on Hwy. 316 in Barrow County this past week.
On May 20, a Barrow County Sheriff’s deputy was seriously injured while attempting to cross Hwy. 316 at Carl Bethlehem Road. The deputy’s patrol car was struck in the area of the driver’s door by a vehicle which ran a red light at the intersection.
The deputy is expected to make a full recovery.
