A Barrow County Sheriff’s deputy remains hospitalized at Athens Regional Medical Center after being involved in a serious accident May 20 on Hwy. 316.
According to Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright, Dep. Carlton Williams was attempting to cross Hwy. 316 at Carl Bethlehem Road at approximately 12:20 p.m. when his vehicle was struck by an eastbound Mercury Cougar driven by Allen Ray Wheeler, 46, of Lawrenceville. Though Wheeler was cited for having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle, Wright said alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith said witnesses estimated Wheeler was traveling approximately 70 mph when he ran a red light and crashed into the side of Williams’ patrol car.
Smith said Williams had to be cut out of the severely damaged vehicle. Williams suffered internal injuries including a lacerated liver, but is expected to make a full recovery. The cage inside the patrol vehicle is believed to have prevented more serious injuries, Smith said.
Wheeler was charged with disregarding a traffic control device, driving on a suspended license, open container and failure to use due care. He was transported to Gwinnett Medical Center with unspecified injuries.
