The three-candidate race for the Barrow County Board of Education District 4 seat has been narrowed.
Incumbent Larry Ballard told the Barrow Journal Monday that he is exiting the race due to health concerns. Ballard said he had a thoracic aortic dissection within the past year and continuing concerns over that will have him going back to Emory University for additional tests.
“I really don’t need the stress of the election,” he said.
Ballard said he is endorsing Will Dunn, one of two challengers who had signed up to run against him in the Republican primary July 20. Former BOE member Beverly Kelley is also running.
“I had a lengthy conversation with Mr. Dunn and I will support him in the election,” Ballard said. “I think he will make a good board member. He has a good, level head.”
Ballard said he hopes to be able to finish out his term, which runs through December.
“I want to thank everyone who supported me,” he said. “I certainly wish all the board members and Dr. (Wanda) Creel well. They have a tough road ahead of them. These decisions are not going to be easy. I hope I will be able to continue to support them in any way I can.”
Ballard filed paperwork with Barrow County elections supervisor Katie Ferm Monday concerning his exit from the race since he did officially qualify in recent weeks. With his announcement coming at this time, it was made before primary ballots had been printed.
Sincerely,
DuWayne R. Anderson
Republican Candidate
for the Dist.7(at large)Barrow County Board of Education Seat.
