The City of Winder Fire Department was recently awarded a $47,310 grant from the Department of Homeland Security.
The department was notified of the award by United States Sen. Johnny Isakson on April 14.
The funds are part of an “Assistance to Firefighters Grant” and will be used to enhance firefighter safety.
A portion of the funds will be utilized to purchase and install a system that will remove harmful diesel fumes from the fire truck bay at both stations. Funds will also be allocated towards the purchase of commercial washing machines at both stations to be used for the purpose of properly cleaning dirty and contaminated protective clothing.
Fire chief Ray Mattison said the grant will greatly enhance the safety and health of firefighters. Mattison expressed the department’s sincere gratitude for the grant to Sen. Saxby Chambliss, Sen. Isakson and the Department of Homeland Security.
