Local political activist Ray Newman is expected to be nominated to serve as second vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention during the SBC’s June 15-16 meeting in Orlando, Fla.
Newman, an ethics and religious affairs specialist, served as a pastor for 30 years and is a trustee of the Southern Baptist Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission.
“I have been a Southern Baptist all my life, but never dreamed I would be honored by having my name placed in nomination to serve as an officer,” Newman said. “I did not aspire to this nomination, I responded when urged by many others to allow my name to be placed before the convention.”
Newman is active in the Barrow County Republican Party and has written a weekly column on political and moral issues for the past seven years.
Newman and his wife Gwen reside in Winder.
