Man reports key stuck in head
Winder police officers were recently dispatched to West Athens Street in response to reports of a fight in progress.
When police arrived, they found Adam Cody Whiten, 17, of 245 Apperson Drive in Winder, with a key lodged in his head. Whiten said an old friend of his, Christopher Long, 17, of 188 Celestial Run in Winder, had struck him while holding a key in his hand. Whiten said he did not want to press charges, but he did want the key removed from his head.
When questioned, Long said he and Whiten were at a church function when they began arguing over the fact that Whiten is currently dating Long’s ex-girlfriend. Long claimed Whiten accosted him and slapped him in the face. Long admitted punching Whiten, but said that Whiten threatened to shoot him.
Long’s ex-girlfriend corroborated his story saying she heard Whiten say he planned to shoot Long as soon as he got the key out of his face.
Based on statements from Whiten, Long and several witnesses, the officer charged Long with Affray and charged Whiten with affray, battery and terroristic threats.
Medications stolen from tent, big-headed man is suspect
A man contacted police after discovering that someone had stolen his medication from his temporary residence on South Broad Street.
The man said he left his tent for approximately three hours to attend church. When he returned, his medications were missing. The man, a cancer patient, said two of his cancer medications had been stolen. A total of 82 pills were reported missing. The man said his cell phone and pocket knife had also been taken.
The man said he did not know who might have taken his belongings, but said he spoke with a suspicious white male on the property a few days prior to the theft.
The suspicious male was described as skinny with a larger than normal head.
Women cited after communications breakdown
Four Winder women were cited for disorderly conduct after failing to “talk to each other in a civilized manner.”
Police were called to West Candler Street in response to a large group gathering to fight. Upon arrival, the officers separated the parties and attempted to ascertain what had transpired.
An officer advised the four women that they should have notified the police and walked away from the confrontation.
The officer wrote, “all four ladies took turns and attempted to speak their minds, but communications broke down to the point where I could not reach common ground with the ladies and settle the incident.”
The women were cited and given a court date.
Man escapes after K-9 detects drugs
A Winder man fled from police and eluded capture after a drug-sniffing canine detected illegal narcotics in his vehicle.
Winder police obtained warrants for the arrest of Adam Heard, 29, of 302 Tuggle Street in Winder, after finding cocaine inside his vehicle.
An officer was called to Tuggle Street regarding a suspicious vehicle in the cul-du-sac. While speaking with several males at the scene, the officer noticed one of the males reach inside the vehicle. The officer became suspicious and requested a K-9 be brought to the scene.
Heard, identified as the driver, denied the vehicle was his. He informed the officer that the car belonged to his “baby’s momma.”
The K-9 handler allowed the dog to conduct a free air sniff outside the vehicle. After the K-9 alerted on the vehicle, the car was hand searched. The officer immediately found a set of digital scales which Heard claimed his mother used for cooking. The officer then discovered drugs under the front seat of the vehicle. Before another officer could place Heard in handcuffs, Heard fled.
Warrants were taken against Heard on charges of possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a government housing project and obstruction.
Woman hears something walking on roof
A deputy was dispatched to a Cedar Creek Drive residence after the homeowner called 911 saying there was someone walking on her roof.
When the deputy arrived, he discovered several small deer approximately 10 feet away from the woman’s trailer. He also saw several unspecified small animals on the top of the trailer.
The deputy wrote that when he told the woman about the animals, she “thanked me for coming and showed me to the door.”
Abrupt turn raises suspicion
A Jefferson woman caught the eye of two Winder police officers after making an abrupt turn into a car wash.
The officers were traveling behind a silver Chrysler Cirrus on East May Street when the driver, Jennifer Suzanne Harvey, 36, of 35 Hunter Road in Jefferson suddenly turned into the Magic Wand Car Wash.
The officers became suspicious and followed Harvey into the lot. The officers drove past the car and checked the tag through the GCIC database. The database showed the vehicle was not insured.
The officers parked behind Harvey and one of the officers approached the vehicle. When the officer asked Harvey if she had insurance, Harvey said she thought she did. The officer noted that Harvey was “nervous and shaky” as well as grinding her teeth and hopping from one foot to the next.
When asked, Harvey denied taking any medication or using any illegal narcotics. According to the report, Harvey then consented to a search of her vehicle.
During the search, an officer found a pink change purse containing a metal box with numerous pills. The officers also discovered pills inside a piece of plastic wrapping and in a Loreal makeup container. A clear, glasslike substance was found in a zip lock style baggie.
Harvey claimed to have a prescription for the pills. When asked about the substance in the zip lock bag, Harvey said it belonged to her boyfriend. Upon further questioning, Harvey admitted the bag held methamphetamine. She said she had been using meth for a year and was trying to get help to break the habit.
In total, the officers discovered 11 Carisprodol pills, three Xanax pills, 53 oxycodone pills and 52 alprazolam pills.
Harvey was arrested and charged with possession of methamphetamine, possession of a controlled substance, three counts of possession of a controlled substance not in its original container and no insurance.
Drunk neighbor causes disturbance
A woman called the Sheriff’s Office after hearing her neighbor yelling.
The woman said the man was yelling that he was “going to stomp a mud hole in everybody.”
The woman felt the statement was directed at her and her husband and that she believed the neighbor might be intoxicated.
After threatening to stomp a mud hole in everybody, the neighbor walked back inside his residence.
Police conduct road checks
Winder police recently conducted two sobriety road checks. The first sobriety road check was held April 10 at King Street and Capitol Avenue. A total of 85 cars passed through the intersection during the check. The following day, another sobriety road check was conducted at the intersection of North Broad and its intersection with East Broad. A total of 205 cars passed through the intersection while the check was being held.
Deputy called for dispute over remains
A deputy was dispatched to a Cronic Town Road residence in response to a verbal dispute regarding a deceased man’s belongings.
When the deputy arrived, he met with a woman and one of her daughters who also serves as the woman’s caretaker. The mother informed the deputy that her husband had passed away and she wanted his ashes. According to the mother, another daughter who lived nearby had the ashes.
The deputy went to the other daughter’s house to investigate further.
When questioned by the deputy, the daughter said her mother had not asked for the ashes, but could have them if she wanted them. The daughter said she and her sister had been arguing over her dad’s belongings, but the argument had nothing to do with his cremated remains and nothing to do with their mother.
The daughter then delivered the ashes to her mother. According to the report, the mother was “very happy.” The two sisters were advised to contact an attorney in reference to their dispute.
