Race approaches speeds near 100 mph

A deputy clocked Austin Taylor Johnson, 19, of 1069 Pathview Court in Dacula, driving a Pontiac Firebird at 99 mph. The deputy also obtained a radar reading of 92 mph on a VW Jetta driven by Victor Manuel Herrera, 22, of 3174 Piney Woods Circle in Buford.

When stopped, both men denied racing. Johnson said he was trying to get to Athens to pick up a friend who was too drunk to drive. Herrera claimed he was just trying to drive his friend home. Herrera added that he did not realize just how much power the VW had. He informed the deputy that he did not know how fast he was going, but knew it was “very fast.”

Herrera’s passenger and the car’s owner, Justin Kenneth Butera, 20, of 1105 Fountain Head Road in Lawrenceville, said he did not tell Herrera to race but also did not do anything to stop him from racing. While speaking with Butera, the deputy noticed an odor of alcoholic beverage. Butera admitted having an alcoholic beverage a few hours prior.

All three were arrested.

Herrera and Johnson were charged with reckless driving, racing and speeding. Butera was charged with underage consumption and allowing another to violate state law.
