The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning until 8 p.m. tonight for Barrow, Habersham, Stephens, Franklin, Hart, Elbert, Fannin, Gilmer, Union, Towns, Pickens, Dawson, Lumpkin, White, Forsyth, Hall, Banks, Jackson, Madison, Clarke and Oglethorpe counties.
A red flag warning means that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring or will occur within 36 hours in the affected areas. These conditions may result in rapidly spreading fires if dry fuel and brush are ignited.
Barrow County Emergency Service public information officer Lt. Scott Dakin said recent sunny weather has resulted in very dry conditions despite above average fall and winter rains.
“We want everyone to be aware of this and to take extra precautions. Any type of fire outdoors in this type of atmosphere could get out of control very quickly and cause extensive damage,” Dakin said.
