The company that built an innovative plant to convert landfill gas into natural gas for local consumption has gone broke.
According to a legal notice published last week, the facility owned by Winder Renewable Methane LLC at the Oak Grove Landfill will be sold at public auction at the Barrow County courthouse on May 4. The company defaulted on a $9.5 million debt.
The limited liability company is affiliated with Renewable Solutions Group LLC, which also is apparently out of business. The owner of the company, David Wentworth of Pennsylvania, could not be reached.
A spokesman for owner of the landfill, Republic Services Inc., said the foreclosure would not affect the operation of the landfill gas conversion facility that is the first of its kind in Georgia and has received national recognition.

“I have talked with our landfill people and am told that this has no impact on landfill operations – we will continue to run and process and sell gas,” said Peg Mulloy, manager of public relations for Republic Services.
The converted gas is distributed through the Municipal Gas Authority of Georgia, which serves municipal gas operations.
MGAG spokesman Chris Strippelhoff said the foreclosure would only mean a change in the plant’s ownership.
“We think it will be business as usual,” he said.
He said he his company had not been contacted as of late last week but that MGAG hopes to be able to continue to receive the converted landfill gas.
“We’re still interested in taking all of the output, because it has been a very good thing for all of us.”
In 2009, which was the Barrow County facility’s first full year of operations, it provided enough natural gas to serve the needs of 5,000 homes, he said.
Most of the yield last year went to Buford’s gas system, which is larger than Winder’s, he said.
Winder began receiving the gas last October.
The converted gas is distributed through the Municipal Gas Authority of Georgia, which serves municipal gas operations.
