School bus driver under investigation

A former Barrow County School system bus driver who was terminated last week for “inappropriate contact” with a student has been accused of soliciting sex from a 16-year-old student.

The stepfather of a 16 year-old female student of Winder-Barrow High School contacted police after learning his stepdaughter and the bus driver had been texting each other. The stepfather said he sent a text to the bus driver asking why the man was texting his stepdaughter. In responding to the text, the bus driver wrote that he did not recognize the number from which the stepfather’s text originated. The stepfather said he later discovered that the bus driver changed his number immediately after receiving the text.

When questioned by police and school officials, the student admitted she and the bus driver had been engaged in a phone relationship. The student said the two had also been in contact on Facebook.

According to the girl, the bus driver asked to have sex with her and also requested oral sex. The girl further advised that the bus driver sent her a picture of his penis.

Det. Sgt. Rachel Love of the Winder Police Department said the investigation is still ongoing and no charges have yet been filed against the driver.

The bus driver is accused of calling several students on their cellular phones and listing them as friends on social networking sites. According to Love, the investigation is complex and involves multiple jurisdictions.

“I’m certain with Winder Police Department, Barrow County Sheriff’s Office and Barrow County Schools working together we will be able to come to a conclusion very soon,” Love said.

Lisa Leighton, public relations coordinator for Barrow County Schools said the system had a zero tolerance policy regarding inappropriate contact with students.

“The safety of all of our students is our upmost priority and concern,” Leighton said. “Immediate and swift action was taken as soon as these allegations were made known to us and as of March 23, 2010, the employee is no longer employed with Barrow County Schools.”

Leighton said school officials will support local authorities in prosecuting any infractions to the fullest extent of the law.

What happened to innocent until proven guilty? Yeah, can the guy for adding kids on Facebook. That's dumb and creates risk for the kids, but I haven't seen any indication that a crime has been committed.

this is just the beginning of things to come. the superintendant needs to be held responsible because this happened before with this employee, he married the student he was having an affair with but nothing was done to him then he was left to do it again, and did. It's like everything else that's going on at the transportation department, continued...As The Busbarn Turns...brace yourselves for all the other things that are unveiling daily....

Amen. Maybe the new superintendent will look a little more closely into whats going on at the ole busbarn. Lots of speeding, irresponsibility and little slaps on the hand. This is for all you people who think you know a thing or two about the Barrow County Tranpotation Department:
Just because one bus driver screwed up, does not mean that all bus drivers do this type of thing. Some of you who are saying things like this could possibly be doing the same thing. Unless you know any person personally, do not make accusations that you can't prove. Yes, this driver is wrong, but all bus drivers do not do these things. Get to know your child's driver if you have any concerns about what they go thru. I happen to know several of the Barrow County Drivers and I would trust my children with them before I would any of you!!!!! As far as the cover ups; unless you work for the Bus Department, you really do not know how things are handled so it might serve you well to keep your mouths shut on this subject. I pay my taxes just like you, so why don't we just let the Sheriff's Dept do thier job and stop asting like we have an inside scoop. If I didn't know better, I would say that for you that are dogging the Bus drivers or Transportation, are former drivers that have gotten fired....

That is not true bus drivers go through a lot of training and its not just someone off the street who can drive a bus.. because not just anyone can drive a bus!!! No, it doesn't take a degree, but yes you have to be certified to drive a bus. No, it's not just people off the street. You have to go through training and tests before you can drive a school bus! Not as easy as it sounds and if you think so why not go apply for a bus driving job!

You are more than welcome to apply for a job driving bus for Barrow County if you think it is so "easy". I invite anyone to try driving a set of routes for just ONE day and then tell me how easy it is. Remember, these drivers have these childrens' live in their hands and they take their jobs very seriously, which is to keep your children safe.

I have asked 4 different people this week, "What is your child's bus driver's name?" They responded,"I don't know." Hats off to the parents of this girl! Get involved parents KNOW who is role modeling to your child!!!! It matters! Your child's bus driver is the first person in their education system that they see and the last! First things, not all bus drivers are so lonely, and sick in the head, that they feel the need to hit on their students. Just like not all teachers put the moves on their students. Any profession one goes into, there will be at least one person who is a pervert and who has no business working where they do.

It doesn't matter how the studnets dress, this bus driver is an ADULT who needs to realize that the young girls he is eyeing are under age. He is a pervert, who needs to learn to keep it in his pants.

Now, I personally know this particular bus driver. In fact, I rode his bus while in high school. I noticed he was always overly friendly with the female students, me in particular. The day after I graduated high school, he asked me for my number and asked me out on dates stating, "You don't ride my bus anymore...'friends' will do whatever 'friends' want to do..." Back to the quote, "how's your daughter dressing," not once have I ever dressed "with everything hanging out". Therefore, without even presenting myself to this dog, I was still saught after.

Given this person's track record, isn't it interesting how with no identification posted in the original article, we could all identify this person. All we needed were the clues "Winder Barrow High School, 30-year old male, and (here' the kicker) 'inappropriate contact with several students.'"

some of these comments are really true,bus drivers are the first thing the kids see in the morning and the last person they see in the pm, you talk about how the girls dress take a look at some of the boys,Do you want to see their underwear all the time tell them to pull up their pants,so don't blame just the girls,or the parents,put the blame where it belongs,on a bus driver who is old enough to know better,not on the young kids,trying to pass in school,now who are scared to ride a bus.

I heard he had his home computer and his cell phone confiscated! That's not gonna stop a petafile like that! he'll just get some change and go to a pay phone and keep it up until he gets convicted. Honestly, all the girls riding his bus that are from the ages of 15-17 need to come forward as well. People like him need to be thrown under the jail!!!

The problem with this whole situation is the driver not only drove a regular route, he also drove a mid-day route for high school and drove high school students on field trips almost every weekend. All of the students he came in contact with need to be interviewed!! Looks like Transportation needs to get busy and coordinate their lists of all possible students with the police. It would'nt hurt to send a letter home to all the parents who may not be familar with this unfortunate situation so that they may discuss this with their children. He needs to be charged and arrested before this happens again!!!

I know this disgusting man and I have heard him myself make comments about how big girls breast are on his bus and reported it to the transportation supervisor 2 yrs ago and nothing was done. Remember why we are here people, an adult the same adult that already did this once and was still allowed to drive, has stepped over the line. Safety of our children. Any memer of management that knew this(all of them) should be held responsible.

I know this bus driver and I thought he was a friend until something like this happens. I just hope everyone writing this stuff does not have a daughter that he came in contact with and if so talk to her and see what he said to your daughter you might not like it.Also there are more then then just one girl involed in this and I'm sure when they get done with this he will be jailed where he needs to be and just think he has daughters of his own would he like if someone did this to his own. If everyone at the Transportation Department spent as much time and effort working as they do sticking their nose in other peoples business and spreading rumors that have no fact or shouldn't matter to them anyway, It would be a much better place to work. I think gossip should be grounds for dismissal.
I agree,the Transportation Department should be looked at by the new superintendent! Because the only thing the Director is guilty of is making the good folks there earn their pay check, its been given to them for standing around with their hands in their pockets for so long that making them work for it is a challenge in its self. I agree with you on the gossiping thing but if you dismiss everyone that gossips here, the first one to go would probably be you. people lets grow up,the man was fired and in order to do that they had to have proof,which they do,for some of you running your mouths if you had or have a daughter you would not want this to happen to them,these kids will need help to get over this,let the law take care of this,and leave transporation out of it,its not their place now its in the hands of the police now.And lets pray this does not hurt the kids anymore than it already has,keep the kids safe is the main concernnow,not a growm man.

I don't know the facts, but how could a person with a previous sex offense on record even get hired as a bus driver in the first place?

I've only seen that claim in the comments, and it does seem unlikely that he would have gotten the job in the first place if he had such a thing on his record.

You cant get a job driving a bus with a sex offense on your record .Please stop talking about this .I am sure there is nothing to this and he has not been arrested so leave him alone .When he is arrested if this ever happens then you have something to talk about ...We just need to pray for him and his family ....
