A Winder man is facing multiple charges after a March 12 incident at a Ledbetter Road residence.
Deputies were called to the home after Byron Joe Ledbetter, 37, injected himself with an unidentified drug.
His sister informed dispatch that Ledbetter had harmed an animal and would run once deputies arrived.
Responding deputies surrounded the house and discovered Ledbetter sitting in the back yard with a rifle. Ledbetter raised the rifle towards several deputies. A deputy ordered Ledbetter to drop the rifle, but Ledbetter failed to do so and failed to acknowledge the deputy’s instructions.
Ledbetter put the barrel of the rifle in his mouth several times. He then pointed the rifle in the air and fired one round.
A deputy approached Ledbetter with a taser hidden behind his back. When the deputy was just a few feet away, Ledbetter raised his rifle towards the deputy. Another deputy was able to knock the rifle from Ledbetter’s hands as Ledbetter was tased and handcuffed.
Deputies found a dead white ferret next to Ledbetter. The ferret had been killed with a hammer.
Ledbetter was transported to Barrow Regional Medical Center to be treated for a drug overdose. He was charged with three counts of aggravated assault against a police officer, three counts of simple assault and obstruction.
