Former Barrow County resident Phillip Dunn remains jailed on murder charges after a Gwinnett County Magistrate Court judge found probable cause to refer the charges to Superior Court for indictment.
Dunn, 28, is accused of fatally stabbing his estranged wife, Shelley Dyan Dunn, in the parking lot of a Gwinnett County Wal-Mart on Feb. 14. The attack took place when the two met to exchange custody of their young children.
When police arrived at the Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road store, they found Shelley Dunn unconscious and Phillip Dunn suffering from a self-inflicted knife wound. Both parties were transported to Gwinnett Medical Center where Shelley Dunn later died of massive internal bleeding.
Dunn was released from the Barrow County Detention Center only four days before the fatal attack occurred.
On Feb. 10, Dunn bonded out of the Barrow County Detention Center after nine days in confinement. He was arrested by Barrow County Sheriff’s deputies on Feb. 1 after reportedly choking his wife in their Hoschton home. Dunn was charged with family violence aggravated battery, family violence aggravated assault and family violence battery in connection with the attack.
At the time of the report, Shelley Dunn told deputies she feared for her life as her husband choked her. According to the report, Shelley had visible red marks around her neck. The attack, which happened as she sat near a fireplace, also caused burns to Shelley's arms which the reporting deputy noted would "more than likely cause permanent scars."
Dunn admitted choking his wife saying he "lost it" because he believed she had feelings for another man. Dunn claimed that he and his wife reconciled after the argument and went to bed.
As a condition of Dunn's Feb. 10 release, he was prohibited from any contact with Shelley Dunn.
