The latest class of the Barrow County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is currently under way. This new group of volunteers is training to join and become active members of the Barrow County CERT Team.
The eight week course is held on Thursday nights at the Barrow County Leisure Services building. Students are trained in search and rescue, medical triage, medical operations, fire safety, hazardous material safety and several other disaster related skills.
“It is always wonderful to see citizens step up and take this training,” said Connie Keener, the public information officer for the CERT Team. “It will help them and every Barrow County citizen be better prepared when disaster hits.”
CERT teaches skills necessary to cope with various emergencies. The goal of CERT training is to make each team member better prepared to help their family, neighbors and community in the event of a disaster. CERT members may be deployed to assist Barrow County Emergency Medical Services and local law enforcement agencies. They also volunteer in many community service functions throughout Barrow County.
