The Barrow County Airport Authority is considering implementing noise abatement procedures even in the absence of noise complaints.
The VFR (Visual Flight Rules) noise abatement procedures tend to be guidelines that are followed on a voluntary basis, however some airports do enforce the rules and ticket pilots not in accordance. The authority is not interested in making the guidelines mandatory, simply looking to keep pilots out of congested areas where noise could be an issue.
Authority member Quinn Born has been researching how other airports in the area handle noise issues. Born was not present at last week’s meeting, but authority member Scott Miller has been assisting in the research process and briefed the other members on their progress.
Born is looking to hold a meeting with local pilots to get their opinion on noise abatement rules. At last month’s meeting, members said that no procedures would be implemented without first holding a public hearing. The meeting would also be a chance to see if the procedures would be feasible.
Some authority members wonder if they would even be necessary, since the authority has no active noise complaints.
No action was necessary.
Other Business:
In other business at the Airport Authority meeting:
•status on the roof repair project was discussed and the project has been unable to be completed due to inclement weather, however it is still ongoing.
•officers that were elected to a one year term on the authority were: Frank Nocera, chairman; Miller, vice chairman; and Jimmy Moore, treasurer/secretary.
•carpet options were discussed for the second floor of the terminal building. The authority will continue exploring options and further discuss carpeting at its next meeting.
I'm not against the abatement rules, but your argument for the rules doesn't hold water.
I do agree that the economy has been the major reason for property value decline.
If we had commercial jet service into/out of KWDR, then we may need noise abatement, otherwise, why are we wasting time and money studying a non-existant problem. My parents live on the approach to rwy 13 and noise has never been a problem for them. Commercial traffic into KWDR would create jobs, add revenue, and bring people to Winder which would help our economy.
Just as an example, Hartsfield-Jackson charges almost $1.08 per 1000 lbs just as a landing fee for contracted airlines. A typical regional jet could weigh as much as 100,000 lbs and that means just for touching down, we get $108.00 in additional revenue right off the top. Not to mention what the 75-150 passengers will spend as they travel through Barrow county. In addition, Hartsfield charges over $20.00 per/hr for the use of ticket counters, almost $3.00 per/passenger per/bag for baggage handling and almost $2.00 per/passenger each way. This doesn't even include apron fees and other gate/parking fees which could nearly double these amounts by themselves. It would mean a HUGE increase in revenue for a county that is being bled to death by incompetent, self centered, and arrogant fools.
If we just had (5) 737 or MD-80 type aircraft daily we could increase revenue to the county by almost $10,000.00 per diem. If we had (14) flights daily (1 per hour starting at 8am and ending at 9pm) revenues would increase to almost $30,000.00 per diem. That is almost
$1 million a month, folks.
Time to look towards the future and be creative in how we deal with issues in this county.
