An officer working an accident on Sims Road during the Feb. 12 snowfall was approached by a firefighter who advised that he smelled alcohol on the breath of woman in a nearby beige Nissan Frontier which was blocking traffic.
When the officer spoke to the woman, he immediately noticed a strong odor of alcohol. The woman denied drinking and said she just wanted to get home.
When the officer informed the woman that he could smell the alcohol on her breath, she admitted having one glass of wine earlier in the evening.
The officer asked the woman to step out of her vehicle so that it could be moved out of traffic. As the officer was escorting the woman to his patrol car, a motorist stopped and informed the officer that he had pulled the woman’s vehicle out of a ditch at the end of McNeal Road and Candler Street. The motorist said the woman had been all over the roadway and unable to stop at the stop sign. There was damage to the driver’s side of the vehicle as well as tree and brush debris covering the hood of the car.
When the officer asked the woman how her vehicle was damaged, she initially claimed someone crashed into her car. She then admitted that she had gone off the roadway, but demanded to know why the officer was “pestering” a 64-year-old woman. The woman said she felt the officer should be apprehending “real bad guys” such as drug dealers.
The woman repeatedly asked the officer to give her a “slap on the wrist” and take her home. When the officer said he could not let her drive her vehicle, the woman reportedly became angry with him.
As the officer dealt with the woman, road conditions continued to deteriorate. After obtaining an alco-sensor reading indicating that the woman’s breath alcohol concentration was .181, the officer asked for an intoxilyzer operator to meet him at the detention center.
Before leaving the scene, the officer impounded the woman’s vehicle and discovered an open bottle of Merlot along with two unopened bottles of wine during the inventory.
The officer attempted to transport the woman to the Barrow County Detention Center, but was unable to get to the jail due to a jack-knifed tractor trailer on Hwy. 211.
Due to the hazardous roadway conditions and the inaccessibility of the jail, the woman was driven home and cited with reckless driving.
