Teen hospitalized after beating
A Winder teen was hospitalized after being beaten for several hours by her parents.
The juvenile, a Winder Barrow High School student, reported to the clinic as soon as she arrived at school the following day because she did not want to go to class with visible injuries on her face.
The juvenile said her mother, Mirian Echeverria, 34, of 809 Caleb Drive in Winder, began slapping her after learning the juvenile had invited a male friend to the house without permission. The mother also reportedly pulled the juvenile’s hair and struck her with a belt. The mother then called the juvenile’s father, Miguel Echeverria, 35, and told him what the juvenile had done.
According to the juvenile, her father arrived home a short time later and began beating her as well. The juvenile said her father struck her repeatedly with a belt and yelled at her. Allegedly, the mother and father took turns beating the juvenile. The juvenile said she was struck on the arms, back, head, face, shins, calves, thighs and arms. The juvenile said her mother also struck her repeatedly in the knees and shins with a toy tool box made of hard plastic.
Afterwards, the juvenile was made to go to the basement. There the beatings continued off and on for another two hours. The juvenile said she had been beaten in similar fashion on three previous occasions but had not reported it because her clothing had covered the injuries.
Evidence photos showed welts and bruises on the juvenile’s back, shoulders, arms, calves, knees, thighs and shins. The juvenile said her arm was very sore and that she had difficulty walking due to the injuries to her knees. She was transported to Barrow Regional Medical Center for evaluation.
The Department of Family and Children Services (DFACS) subsequently placed the juvenile in a foster home.
Miguel and Mirian Echeverria were charged with first degree cruelty to children and family violence battery.
