An arsonist is being blamed for a Feb. 18 fire which destroyed a vacant home located near the intersection of Hwy. 81 and Hwy. 316.
Just before midnight, communications officers received several 911 calls reporting the structure fire. Engines 3 and 7, Med 7 and Battalion 1 were dispatched.
“Upon arrival in the area, firefighters found a house that was fully involved,” said Barrow County Emergency Services public information officer Lt. Scott Dakin. “It was already collapsing in the middle of the structure upon the first engine arriving on the scene.”
Firefighters did not attempt to make entry due to the amount of fire and structural damage present upon arrival. After the fire was extinguished, the Fire Investigation Team was called to the scene. The subsequent origin and cause investigation indicated the fire was an intentional human act.
The investigation by Barrow County Emergency Services and the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office is ongoing.
The Georgia Arson Control Board is offering up to a $10,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for this fire. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Arson Hotline at 1-800-282-5804.
