Firefighters with Barrow County Emergency Services responded to 28 collisions during last week’s winter storm.
With snow falling during the evening commute on Friday, road conditions deteriorated quickly resulting in numerous calls to Barrow County Emergency Services.
“Of course the condition of the roads slowed the response of our units on every call,” said interim chief John Skinner. “We managed each and every call to the best of our abilities.”
Barrow County Emergency Services opened their Emergency Operations Center at 5 p.m. Friday afternoon to handle the large volume of calls. The department also staffed additional units to meet demand for services.
The department responded to numerous reports of downed power lines and trees along with eight emergency medical service calls.
From 4 p.m. Friday until 10 a.m. on Saturday, the E911 center fielded a total of 2,165 calls. Of those, 281 were of an emergency nature and were immediately dispatched by communications officers.
Skinner thanked everyone involved with the storm response.
“It was a long night and morning for all of us, yet everyone involved worked great together in handling each and every call as quickly and effectively as possible,” he said.
