The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office has obtained warrants for a Jefferson man who led deputies on an extended, high speed chase near Statham.
Joshua Lee Nix, 23, of 1001 B Whitfield Road in Jefferson, is facing multiple charges stemming from the Feb. 5 incident.
A deputy parked near the intersection of Hwy. 82 and Hwy. 211 saw Nix pass through the intersection without stopping at the stop sign. Nix then passed another vehicle in a no-passing zone.
As the deputy attempted to catch up to Nix, he realized Nix was traveling at a high rate of speed. The deputy activated his emergency lights and siren as he pursued the vehicle. The deputy pursued Nix onto Nunnally Road as Nix continued to ignore the deputy’s signals to stop.
At Pleasant Hill Church Road, Nix sped through the intersection without stopping and turned towards Atlanta Highway.
Between Dooley Town Rd. and Sunset Dr., Nix again passed a vehicle in a no passing zone. Nix then turned onto Price Street where the deputy estimated Nix was traveling 60 mph in a 25 mph zone.
As Nix rounded a curve, he lost control of his vehicle and ran off the roadway. The deputy located Nix’s vehicle approximately 100 yards away from the road in a clump of thick brush and briars.
By the time the deputy reached the vehicle, Nix was gone.
Deputies located Nix’s passenger, Kim Abernathy, 25 of 1141 Hwy. 124 in Hoschton, hiding in the woods. Abernathy said Nix was her boyfriend and possibly the father of one of her children. Abernathy said Nix fled from police because he feared being arrested for DUI.
Abernathy was charged with misdemeanor obstruction for attempting to flee the scene of the accident. Nix was not located, but warrants were secured for his arrest on charges of failure to stop at a stop sign, passing in a no passing zone, passing at a railroad crossing, reckless driving, reckless conduct, felony fleeing and attempting to elude and leaving the scene of an accident.
Nix remains at large as of press time.
