An intoxicated Winder man was arrested after backing into another vehicle in a grocery store parking lot.
Witnesses said Michael Schoen Karpowski, 41, of 973 Hancock Bridge Road in Winder, appeared to be intoxicated when he entered the Ingles on North Broad Street.
After “staggering” through the store, Karpowski backed his Chevrolet Blazer into a Dodge Ram pickup truck. Several people witnessed the accident.
When police arrived, Karpowski was still sitting in his vehicle. As the officer was interviewing a witness, Karpowski walked over and yelled “I just barely bumped that truck.”
After concluding his interview with the witness, the officer spoke with Karpowski. According to the report, Karpowski’s eyes were blood shot and glassy. The officer also noticed a moderate odor of alcoholic beverage. An alco-sensor reading indicated a blood alcohol level of .224.
Karpowski said he had several health problems and just wanted to go home. He informed the officer that he had 28 teeth removed that day and his gums were hurting. Karpowski removed his dentures to show the officer where the teeth had been removed.
After a series of field sobriety test, Karpowski was arrested for DUI.
Karpowski refused to get into the patrol car forcing the officer to physically force him into the rear of the vehicle. Karpowski then began kicking the window of the patrol car. Eventually, the officer was able to secure Karpowski and transport him to the Barrow County Detention Center.
During the trip to the jail, Karpowski cursed the officer and threatened to sue. Karpowski informed the officer that his patrol car would not have any tires on it by the time he was finished.
Once at the jail, the officer asked Karpowski to submit to the state breath test. Karpowski claimed he did not speak English.
He was charged with DUI and disorderly conduct.
