The Barrow County Sheriff’s Explorers will be traveling to Gatlinburg, Tenn. this weekend for a law enforcement Explorers competition.
Explorer posts from across the country are expected to attend. Last year, 22 Explorer posts with a total of approximately 3,000 participants competed.
Each post is allowed to compete in four events. For each event, a four member team represents the post. Teams are randomly assigned one of 11 events the night before the competition. Events include law enforcement activities such as felony traffic stops, high risk search warrants, hostage situations, bomb threats, inmate searches and more.
In 2009, the Barrow County Sheriff’s Explorers placed in two events. The post took second place in felony traffic stops and fifth in DUI traffic stops.
Explorer coordinator Dep. Barry Chandler will lead a group of 15 Explorers at this weekend’s event.
