A 15-year-old Apalachee High School student is facing felony charges after bringing a loaded .357 revolver to school on Jan. 22.
The juvenile carried the weapon throughout the school day and onto the bus that afternoon. After the juvenile exited the bus, another student informed the bus driver that the juvenile had been armed. The bus driver immediately notified the school system.
Deputies and school officials were dispatched to the juvenile’s home to investigate.
According to Sgt. Cecil Kidd of the Barrow County Sheriff’s Office, the juvenile admitted bringing the weapon to school and said he brought it “for protection.”
As a result of the investigation, the juvenile was charged with brining a weapon onto school grounds.
Kidd said authorities are investigating whether any other students may have seen the weapon at school and whether any other crimes may have been committed.
“There’s still some investigation going on right now. What we do know is that he admitted having the weapon on school grounds,” Kidd said.
In a written statement, Lisa Leighton, public relations coordinator for Barrow County Schools, explained the school system is required by law to report any code of conduct infractions involving this type of offense to the Department of Education as well as to local authorities.
“We are not at liberty to discuss discipline issues regarding students,” Leighton wrote. “This student has been expelled as required by the code of conduct and is no longer enrolled at Apalachee High School.”
keeping us safe the right way, they search for drugs once every 2 months, but anyone can walk in with any type of weapon.
