Motorcyclist crashes into patrol car, flees

A deputy spotted Christopher Michael Jones, 35, of 462 Wall Rd in Statham, driving a motorcycle without any protective headgear. The deputy activated his emergency lights and attempted to stop Jones on Atlanta Highway. Jones turned on to Dooley Town Road and slowed near the railroad tracks. Instead of stopping, Jones made an abrupt u-turn and struck the patrol car with the motorcycle. Jones then went around the deputy’s car and headed back onto Atlanta Highway.

According to the report, Jones was unable to hold his motorcycle within his lane of travel. The deputy wrote that he pulled alongside Jones and “advised him that he was making things worse for himself and to stop.”

At that point, Jones reportedly jerked his motorcycle towards the deputy striking the patrol car with the handlebars of the motorcycle. The impact caused Jones to lose control of the cycle. Jones crossed over the opposite lane of travel before passing over some gravel, through a driveway and into a ditch.

Before the deputy could reach him, Jones abandoned the motorcycle and ran into some nearby woods.

The deputy determined that the motorcycle was not registered or insured. The motorcycle also had no working headlight, taillights or brake lights. The cycle was subsequently impounded.

Georgia State Patrol responded to the scene to handle the accident report. The deputy’s patrol car sustained minor damage to the front bumper and numerous deep scratch marks on the side of the vehicle. The deputy was not injured.

Later that day, another deputy saw Jones riding in a green Ford Taurus. Deputies stopped the vehicle and placed Jones under arrest. During the traffic stop, a deputy noticed that the driver, Sunshine Carter, 19, also of 462 Wall Road in Statham, smelled of alcoholic beverages. Inside the vehicle, Carter had a half-empty open bottle of Canadian whiskey.

Carter admitted having a “few shots” of whiskey. She also admitted being on some medications, but said none of them would impair her ability to operate a motor vehicle.

After a series of field sobriety evaluations, Carter was arrested for driving under the influence.

Jones was charged with aggravated assault, operating an unsafe vehicle, operating a motorcycle on roadway without a headlight and tail lights, failure to wear protective headgear, failure to maintain lane, failure to stop at a stop sign, obstruction of a law enforcement officer, operating a vehicle without insurance, leaving the scene of an accident, driving while license suspended, operating an unregistered vehicle, fleeing, interference with government property, reckless driving and failure to have eye-protective gear on a motorcycle.
