Amber Lynn Menniefee, age 17, of Buford was booked into the Gwinnett County Detention Center Monday afternoon on charges of possessing a weapon on school property and aggravated assault.
According to Jorge Quintana, Director of Media Relations for Gwinnett County Public Schools, Menniefee and sophomore Shariff Omar Richardson were arguing about an incident that occurred over the weekend. The argument escalated into a physical confrontation when Richardson allegedly grabbed Menniefee and spit in her face.
Menniefee retaliated by cutting Richardson with a box cutter. Richardson received superficial injuries and did not require medical transport.
Richardson was charged with simple battery and disruption of a public school for his role in the incident. Richardson was still being held at the detention center as of Thursday morning with a $5,150 bond.
Menniefee was released Monday night on an $8,450 bond.
A third student, junior Kierstyn Nicole Simpson of Buford was arrested for her attempt to hinder the investigation. Simpson reportedly hid the box cutter used in the attack from the school resource officer investigating the incident.
Simpson is facing charges of disrupting a public school. She was released from the detention center Monday afternoon on a $1,200 bond.
Quintana said all three students will face school disciplinary action in addition to criminal charges.
“There will be disciplinary consequences,” Quintana said. “None of this behavior is allowed on school grounds. The rules are there and the rules are enforced.”
