First annual Jug Drop set for Dec. 31

Looking for a fun way to ring in the New Year? Look no further than the Barrow County Museum.

The Barrow County Historical Society will be hosting the inaugural New Year’s Eve “Jug Drop” at the museum on Thursday, Dec. 31.

Local merchants will be on hand selling food and other merchandise. The event will also feature free drawings for gifts from local businesses.

The Barrow County Historical Society will be offering special refreshments including Nodoroc Mud (hot chocolate) and Wog Nog (special apple cider).

Other activities include live music, dancing and a “Miss Jug” contest in which local men will compete to see who makes the prettiest and most talented “woman.”

The Jug Drop will take place at the Barrow County Museum, 74 West Athens Street in Winder, from 8 p.m. until midnight.

What is the historical significance of the jug? Is this really the way we want to reflect our community? Just a thought.

I get what the historical group is trying to do. I agree that we need to preserve our old buildings. I would support your trying to get all the beautiful old homes/buildings on the national historical registry.

I agree we need to insure our children learn about the past so they don't repeat it. But really people -- a moonshine? dropping a moonshine jug from the ole hanging tower? NO. We're hicks and proud of it?

This is NOT the image Barrow County needs, especially right now when they are in the news (local and AP) over lawsuits ranging from firing a teacher over a facebook page photo, county land grabs,politically motivated rezone denials, use of the "N" word, sexual and racial harassment, break-ins at the annex, -- NO -- you want POSITIVE publicity and this is not positive publicity - it's showing the world Barrow County is "proud" of the fact it was moonshine central run by the Barrow County Mafia. The sad part - there are still people here who "claim" to proud, card carrying member of the Barrow County Mafia.

I won't be there, I hope most of Winder won't be there.

Embarassing to the citizens to say the least! This kind of "festivities" is not a place I want to take my young children to ring in the New Year, But... Barrow County has nothing to offer as entertainment to the younger members of our county so why should we expect them to offer something appropriate now?

This is the best thing this county can come up with. With all the issues surrounding our county we have "The JugDrop" How redneck do we look now? Well I am anther small business owner now considering relocating my business elsewhere. I know serveral of you will say ' good please leave" But this County needs a huge overhaul. Winder Ga, future gost town of Georgia. Enjoy your Jug Drop. I would rather go and support a good local business like Down riggers onwed by Mike and Angie.

More classy than a bunch of crazed rednecks dressed like a hairy animal , partying in the street. At least they are near the Sheriffs office so the ones with warrants will be picked up easier or the ones getting ready for a DUI can just walk in the doors and save the deputies gas lol. Barrow County sinking to a new low.

And I don't see what tha big deal is, I'm guessin everyone that commented on this are not originally from winder, jug tavern is what winders original name was and the wog is just one of the old storries that go back forever ago! What's wrong with being proud of where your from or your towns past present and future and if you're going to hate on the Dixie mafia then call them by their real name, nobody is making you go to this or making you live in winder, everyone of ya'll are just the kinds of people who aren't happy unless you got somethin to complain and nag about.

I agree with Logan. Why can't we Southerners be proud of who we are and our heritage? Heck, Dawsonville has their annual moonshine festival every year and people flock to it. I like what the Historical Society is doing with the jug drop.

I think the difference is the fact this is being put on by the BARROW COUNTY Historical Society and not the CITY OF WINDER. The city of Winder can have their own little party celebrating the Moonshine and Wog monster thingy. The rest of the Cities that make up BARROW COUNTY such as Auburn, Bethlehem and Braselton might not be thrilled by this one little sore spot of the history of this county to be brought out and celebrated while the rest of the HISTORY of this COUNTY are not even being represented. Things such as the railroad, Textile Mills, Native Americans, Fort Yargo etc. The only thing they celebrated was the moon shine stills and jugs, some monster and dudes that dress like a lady contest. I agree that no one makes me/us live in Winder and I am proud to admit that I DO NOT live in Winder as that is one run down poverty dwellers paradise. I chose to live outside of that nasty area and am embarassed that Braselton is part of Barrow County after this.

Well this event didn't go according to plan. I knew it was a bad idea. Now it looks like the tax payers are going to have to foot the bill against a law suit...
