Historical Society prepares for New Year’s Eve Jug Drop

The purpose of the event, which will be held at the Barrow County Museum, is to raise awareness for the museum.

Modeled after the New York apple drop and the Atlanta peach drop, the “Jug Drop” pays homage to Winder’s Jug Tavern roots.

On Sunday, Frank Nocera, Scott Hang, Oscar Hudson, Robert Bridges and Perry Barton delivered “The Jug” and a whiskey still to the museum. The still will be the featured display during December and January and will remain on permanent loan from the North Georgia Mountain Fair.

The Jug, also known as John B. Jug, is the symbol of the celebration. A full story about John B. Jug and his family is online at the Jug Drop page on Facebook. To date, approximately 260 people have joined the group to discuss the jug family, keep up-to-date on “Jug Drop” happenings and see photos of the preparations.

As participants ring in 2010, the “Jug” will be dropped from the top of the hanging tower at the old jail which now serves as a museum.

Barrow County’s legendary monster, The Wog, will also make an appearance during the festivities.

Other activities include live music, dancing and a “Miss Jug” contest in which local men will compete to see who makes the prettiest and most talented “woman.”
The Barrow County Historical Society will be offering special refreshments including Nodoroc Mud (hot chocolate), Jailhouse Gin (ginger ale), Moonshine (water) and Wog Nog (special apple cider).

Local merchants will be on hand selling food and other merchandise. The event will also feature free drawings for gifts from local businesses. A limited number of booths are available for the event. All booths may be reserved at no cost. For reservations, contact Teeny Hang at 770-231-7097.

The event will be held Thursday, December 31 from 8 p.m. to midnight at the Barrow County Museum located at 74 West Athens Street in Winder.
