Creel wants PR position for system; pay would be $63,000-$94,000
Wednesday, October 31. 2012
Superintendent Wanda Creel recommended Tuesday that the Barrow County Board of Education authorize the hiring of a public relations specialist with experience in both education and journalism. The district’s human resources director Sherri Freeman outlined the requirements for the proposed position, which would include handling media requests, lobbying political officials and helping schools “ensure” positive news.
Freeman said the position would be advertised with a salary ranging from $63,000-$94,000. But BOE member Will Dunn challenged the salary and asked Freeman do a comparison with other districts of similar size for this type of position. The system had that position before the recent budget cuts from the recession, but it paid around $20,000 less at that time.

Halstead was taken to Barrow Regional Medical Center where a flight took him to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. His parents, Bill and Stacy Halstead, have been keeping a vigil ever since, reporting to friends and family what the situation is hour-to-hour.
“Right now it is positive,” said Connie Wilbanks, who owns the daycare center where the incident happened. “(Tripp’s mother) said she felt the prayers of everyone and she asked for more.”
Wilbanks closed her facility following the accident, but decided to reopen on Tuesday because of parents’ needs. The daycare is licensed to serve 25 children.

Huge number vote early
Wednesday, October 31. 2012
Early voting in Barrow County picked up steam this week as local candidates began their final countdown to Election Day 2012. “We had 806 today for a total of 8,512 in-person votes,” said Barrow County elections supervisor Monica Franklin on Tuesday night. “We have 741 mailed-in absentee ballots as of the end of business today. So if you add those together, we have had 9,253 votes cast early.”
The biggest draw now for early voters is the tight Presidential race, this time between Democrat incumbent Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney. But there also are two contested local races of interest. Johnny C. Smith, a Winder Democrat, is challenging the reelection of Republican District 3 Commissioner Steve Worley, who at this point has the only undecided seat on the next Barrow County Board of Commissioners. And James V. Scott, a Statham Democrat, is challenging Republican incumbent Sheriff Jud Smith.

Water hike prospects dim
Wednesday, October 31. 2012
Six weeks after the chairman of the Barrow County Water & Sewerage Authority recommended a 77-percent hike in the county’s wholesale water rate, there are strong indications that an increase of that magnitude will not occur. At an Oct. 24 meeting requested by the county’s mayors, Winder Mayor David Maynard presented a study showing that the current rate of $1.60 per 1,000 gallons already covers the county’s full cost of wholesale water operations. Said Maynard: “The total cost at 2.3 million gallons a day is $1.55 per 1,000 gallons. Not to get into what future rates would be, this is what you are spending on water. So you are covered at $1.60.”
