Largely because of what Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith calls “bonehead” decisions by former detention officers, taxpayers are on the hook for an additional $50,000 in overtime costs to pay other jailers who are now working extra shifts.Since November, 10 percent — 10 out of 106 — of the Barrow County Detention Center’s staff have resigned or been forced out of their jobs. Perhaps the most "boneheaded" decision by a Barrow jailer was that one allowed accused cop killer Jamie Hood to cut the hair of other inmates in the jail when he was supposed to be on lock down.
