Jailers axed over ‘bonehead’ actions

Largely because of what Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith calls “bonehead” decisions by former detention officers, taxpayers are on the hook for an additional $50,000 in overtime costs to pay other jailers who are now working extra shifts.Since November, 10 percent — 10 out of 106 — of the Barrow County Detention Center’s staff have resigned or been forced out of their jobs. Perhaps the most "boneheaded" decision by a Barrow jailer was that one allowed accused cop killer Jamie Hood to cut the hair of other inmates in the jail when he was supposed to be on lock down.

Downtown Braselton road project delayed by a week

If there’s one thing that Braselton town manager Jennifer Dees wants motorists to know this week, it’s pay attention to signs alerting folks of traffic changes.

That’s because the town is slated to wrap up its realignment of Ga. Hwy. 124 at the intersection of Ga. Hwy. 53 in downtown Braselton in about a week.

But until all of the finishing touches are installed, Dees said that motorists should be aware that temporary traffic changes will continue as crews work on the road project.

“Right now, it looks like it’ll be a week delayed,” Dees said on Tuesday.

The Wildcats have been off since the spring scrimmage as coach Shane Davis wanted to give the players a break following spring work and exams. H.S. Feldman services to Winder to end Aug. 1

The Winder City Council on May 24 approved a legal settlement that on Aug. 1 will end H.S. Feldman Inc.’s services to the city. The speed of the settlement was surprising, since it involves more than $26.7 million in lost future revenue for a company that has operated Winder’s wastewater system since 2000 and its water system since 2003.

Accused wife-killer's confession permissible in court

At a Tuesday hearing held to determine whether accused killer James Morris “Jim” Lynn confessed to police two days after Tonya Faye Lynn was reported missing in late July of 2011, a Barrow County judge decided to allow the recorded confession to be admitted.

Ginn ‘disappointed’ in Yearwood run

Danny Yearwood’s 11th-hour decision last week not to seek re-election as chairman of the Barrow County Board of Commissioners — but instead to try to knock Republican Sen. The speed of the settlement was surprising, since it involves more than $26.7 million in lost future revenue for a company that has operated Winder’s wastewater system since 2000 and its water system since 2003. The $1.9 million annual wastewater contract was not scheduled to expire until the end of 2024. The $1.1 million-per-year water treatment contract was not up for renewal until 2014. [Full Story »]

At a Tuesday hearing held to determine whether accused killer James Morris “Jim” Lynn confessed to police two days after Tonya Faye Lynn was reported missing in late July of 2011, a Barrow County judge decided to allow the recorded confession to be admitted. Lynn’s trial in the murder is slated to begin July 11. Lynn was arrested on an obstruction charge relating to his wife's disappearance and was formerly indicted by a grand jury on murder and aggravated assault charges in October 2011. Prosecutors believe Lynn bludgeoned his wife with a baseball bat and then dumped her body in a well.
