As the candidate-qualifying period for the 2012 elections approaches, the meetings of the Barrow County Board of Commissioners are taking on a markedly low-key tone. Auburn residents say sirens not loud enough

Several Auburn residents told the Auburn City Council last week that the city’s weather alert sirens aren’t loud enough. The residents said that while the sirens can be heard if you are outside, they cannot be heard from inside a house. [Full Story »] 

Barrow has high wreck fatality rate

According to a report soon to be released by the Atlanta Regional Commission, Barrow County had the highest traffic fatality rate in the entire 18-county metropolitan Atlanta area from 2006-2008. The ARC, which is the federally designated Metropolitan Planning Organization for the 18-county metro area, has developed individual crash reports for each county and is planning to distribute them April 12 to the regional Transportation & Air Quality Committee. Barrow grad rates fall under new formula

Using a new formula, graduation rates for area schools were placed downward in revised figures released by the Georgia Department of Education on Tuesday. In Barrow County, Apalachee High School’s graduation rate fell from 77 percent to 65.48 percent with the new formula. Winder-Barrow High School’s graduation rate dropped from 76.4 percent to 65.43 with the new calculation.

DOT suggests motorists avoid crash site during repairs

Clean up for a crash site area where a tanker truck carrying gasoline overturned near Ga. Hwy. 316 on Winder Highway Monday afternoon is not scheduled until Thursday, the Georgia Department of Transportation said Tuesday morning.

The work is planned to begin at 9 a.m. and conclude by 4 p.m. unless unforeseen damage is found. One lane and shoulder will be closed at a time and traffic will be led through the area by a pilot truck. If possible avoid the area, the DOT warns, and if you must travel in this area, slow down and allow extra time as clean up crews work. [Full Story »]

Winder's Horton Street RR crossing closed for repairs

Contractors for CSX Transportation Inc. closed the Horton Street railroad crossing in Winder this morning. Winder police chief Dennis Dorsey said his staff has placed warning signs on adjacent streets and would add police officers to direct traffic if backups develop. [Full Story »] 

Auburn approves apartment complex

The Auburn City Council unanimously approved a rezoning of 11 acres for a new apartment complex last week, but the action was not without some controversy. Two Auburn residents spoke against the rezoning of a proposed rental development on Mount Moriah Road during a public hearing held Thursday. They were concerned about the possibility of public transportation in the City of Auburn to serve the complex.

Hasn’t this weather been exceptional lately?

We have been trying to take advantage of it all that we can, and a week ago we took the boys to one of our favorite places: Unicoi State Park. Many of you may be familiar with Unicoi State Park. It’s right outside of Helen, Georgia, and it’s near Anna Ruby Falls.

But we also love the easy Lake Loop Trail, and it’s perfect for small children. It’s about 2.5 miles around Smith Lake, which is also known as Unicoi Lake. It’s a flat trail, and I think we even took our jogging stroller on it once when our eldest was very little. [Full Story »]
