Restaurants, stores and music coming to ‘new Winder’

After wooing Carmike Cinemas Inc. to Barrow County, the developers of The Gateway at University Parkway are about to begin construction of their next venture — a 14,000-square foot retail center near the theaters. Gateway Station will feature a sports bar, a pizza restaurant, a music “listening room” for live performances of up-and-coming songwriters, and retail shops. One of the restaurants will be Top Dawg Tavern, a high-end sports bar that will occupy 4,000-5,000 square feet of space, Rich Combs told the newspaper last week.

Zoning request approved for new Dollar General Market in Statham

Plans for a new Dollar General store were set Tuesday night when Statham City Council agreed to the rezoning of more than three acres at the intersection of Highway 8 and Highway 211. The site will be used for a new 20,700 square-foot store. The store will be11,000 square feet larger than standard Dollar General stores and will sell more grocery items, including frozen foods, dairy items and meats. [Full Story »] 

Wrecks down now in Barrow

Barrow County might have had metro Atlanta’s highest traffic fatality rate from 2006-2008, but both wrecks and fatalities have dropped precipitously since then. The Atlanta Regional Commission soon will release its crash reports for each of the 18 counties in the region. Barrow’s report will say it had more than 5,014 wrecks on local roads during the study period and 36 fatalities. [Full Story »]

In light of two unfavorable developments, county officials are exploring new funding options for the multi-million-dollar replacement of Barrow County Emergency Services’ radio system. The issue now has ventured into the political arena, with critics raising questions about how Barrow County commission chairman Danny Yearwood has handled the situation. In response to complaints that he has left both municipal officials and his own board out of the loop, he met personally with the mayors at a private meeting on April 13 and has called a meeting of the Barrow County Board of Commissioners for 3 p.m. Thursday, April 19. BREAKING NEWS: Auburn shooting suspect also dies

A man who shot two women in an Auburn apartment Monday in a domestic disturbance and then shot himself while in a standoff with a Gwinnett Police Department SWAT team and Suwanee police officers died at Gwinnett Medical Center Monday night, Auburn Police chief Paul Nadeau said Tuesday.

One of the female victims is still alive and in stable condition. She is identified as Monica Ann Long, 32, and she is recovering at Gwinnett Medical Center, according to Nadeau. The deceased female is identified as Betty Marie Maddox, 34, Nadeau said. [Full Story »]
