Barrow County Commission Chairman Danny Yearwood over the past week has put on public display the temper that he is known for. Last Thursday, after becoming frustrated over a Winder employee’s report to a council committee, he stormed out of a city meeting and slammed the door on his way out. [Full Story »] 

A public skirmish last week between Barrow County and Winder officials threatened to disrupt the planned consolidation of the county’s E-911 and city police dispatch services. But the flaring tempers and a slammed meeting room door appear to have been much ado about nothing. For now, the consolidation appears to be back on track.

Barrow County's emergency services chief will ask the board of commissioners Tuesday night to provide 20 percent in matching funds so that the department can buy six new cardiac monitors and defibrillators. The department has a federal grant of $209,900 for the monitors, but needs the BOC to match that with $52,500 locally. Chief Dennis Merrifield will also ask the board to allow him to apply for another $1.5 million in federal grant funds over the next two years to add 12 additional staff members. But after two years, those funds would go away and the county would have to pick up all of that cost if the grant were given to the county. [Full Story »] 

A Barrow County Magistrate Judge denied bond for a Winder man who faces charges he allegedly beat his pregnant wife with an oxygen tank causing her to break several bones and require a dozen stiches in the back of her head earlier this week. [Full Story »]
