Barrow school leaders to discuss possible uniforms

Barrow County’s newly-created cluster governance teams will in March for the second time this school year and among their topics will be the possible move toward school uniforms. School superintendent Wanda Creel and Chris Griner, director of business services, have also created a video for these meetings which will cover budgeting information. Griner told the board the video focuses mainly on the FY2012 budgeting process. [Full Story »] 

Airport Authority agrees to resolve audit issue

An issue that has plagued the Barrow County Airport Authority and its longest-term tenant for the past three years may soon be resolved. At its Feb. 21 meeting, the authority and Romanair, the airport fixed base operator, tentatively agreed to a compromise that would solve a back rent issue first brought to light in late 2009. DOT tests signal at the intersection of State Route 211 and McNeal in Winder

A new traffic signal in Winder at the intersection of State Route 211 and McNeal Road in front of the Holly Hill mall went into operation at about 10:30 Tuesday morning, Georgia Department of Transportation communication director Teri Pope told the Barrow Journal. [Full Story »] 

New firm to pickup Winder garbage

A different company next week will start making the weekly pickups of garbage and other solid waste materials from Winder’s homes and light commercial businesses. Waste Management is replacing Republic Services, which owns the local landfill. The city’s new four-year contract begins March 1, and the weekly service to just over 5,000 customers begins Monday, March 5. [Full Story »]

The Barrow County Board of Education meets to discuss several items in its work session Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the BCSS Professional Development Center located at 179 West Athens St., Winder. The board will begin by receiving school improvement presentations from Holsenbeck Elementary School principal Jackie Robinson and Kennedy Elementary School Principal Ryan Butcher. [Full Story »]

The Georgia Supreme Court on Monday released a unanimous opinion that should end the legal struggle over the $3 million estate of the late Barrow County commission chairman Eddie Elder. The Feb. 27 opinion by the state’s highest court leaves the entire estate with Elder’s widow, Eva Smith Elder, who is the District 2 representative on the Barrow County Board of Commissioners.

The demolition of the century-old Granite Hotel in downtown Winder may be unleashing something that city officials haven’t put in the contingency plans. According to a night watch commander at the Barrow County Detention Center, the hotel built in 1899 out of blocks of granite may have harbored dead spirits – or worse – that shop owners over the years have felt, heard and even seen.
