The Barrow County Superior Court recently sentenced the following people. Those charged and their sentences are listed below. Charges listed as nolle prosequi are those in which the prosecutor or plaintiff indicated they would not proceed with the case. In criminal cases, a disposition of nolle prosequi may be entered when evidence proves innocence or charges cannot otherwise be proved. [Full Story »] 

Violent crimes decrease nationally, statewide

Figures released Sept. 13 by the Federal Bureau of Investigation show the number of violent crimes reported in the United States has declined for the third consecutive year. The report also shows a decrease in the number of reported property crimes marking the seventh straight year that the number of offenses dropped below the previous year’s total. [Full Story »]

Carl residents to foot bill for garbage pickup

Carl residents will begin paying for their own garbage service beginning early in 2011.

The town is looking to make billing private, which means it will no longer foot the bill for the service.

“It’s not as if we’re abandoning our neighbors in this transition,” mayor David Brock said. “Basically the city can’t afford to do it anymore. The city can’t afford to pay for it.”

Town attorney Wayne McLocklin said that recent increases to the consumer price index, fuel and dumping fees further worsen the burden on the town. Currently, garbage service is one of the largest outlays in the Carl budget. [Full Story »]
