Police claim search consensual, cordial

Almost two months after denying practically every allegation contained within the civil rights violation lawsuit filed by former Winder resident Dana Billings, attorneys for the City of Winder further laid out their defense in disclosures filed May 14 in federal court.

Billings filed suit against the City after her son was allegedly forced from his grandmother’s Pinerock Road home on April 16, 2009. The 15-year-old teen was questioned at length by investigators with the Winder Police Department regarding the whereabouts of the fugitive Quincy Smith.

The lawsuit alleges that police searched the home without consent and without a warrant. The lawsuit further accuses Winder Police officers of committing the acts of false arrest, false imprisonment, illegal search and invasion of privacy. [Full Story »]

Winder plans more fee and rate hikes

The new budget for Winder’s upcoming fiscal year includes several rate and fee increases.

In addition to higher water and sewer rates announced last week, the FY2011 budget includes a $1 “per cart” monthly fee increase for garbage service and a new “environmental protection services” fee.

At a public input meeting Monday about the new budget, finance director Leslie Henderson said the new fee would cover the cost of implementing state-mandated environmental programs in the city.

The costs of the programs during FY2011 is budgeted at $760,000. [Full Story »]

Barrow deputy injured in wreck

A Barrow County Sheriff’s deputy remains hospitalized at Athens Regional Medical Center after being involved in a serious accident May 20 on Hwy. 316.

According to Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright, Dep. Carlton Williams was attempting to cross Hwy. 316 at Carl Bethlehem Road at approximately 12:20 p.m. when his vehicle was struck by an eastbound Mercury Cougar driven by Allen Ray Wheeler, 46, of Lawrenceville. Though Wheeler was cited for having an open container of alcohol in his vehicle, Wright said alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
