Landfill gas firm files bankruptcy

A company that owns a landfill gas processing facility at Barrow County’s Oak Grove Sanitary Landfill has filed bankruptcy in Louisiana.

By filing the Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition April 30, Winder Renewable Methane LLC avoided an advertised May 4 foreclosure sale.

The company is developing a financial reorganization plan and continues to own and to operate the landfill gas facility, according to its New Orleans attorney Douglas Draper.

“Everything is functioning as if the bankruptcy was not filed,” he said. [Full Story »]

County chairman to extend fire chief offer

The political impasse over who should be Barrow County’s next chief of emergency services may be over.

Following a closed session Tuesday night, the Barrow County Board of Commissioners voted to extend an offer to Donald R. Towne, the fire chief of Cairo.

However, the motion did not include a salary figure. So the offer is still open to negotiation by Commission Chairman Danny Yearwood. He was authorized to extend the offer in the absence of Human Resources Director Norma Jean Brown, who is out of town at a statewide human resources conference.

The motion, approved unanimously, directs the chairman to work in her absence with benefits coordinator Michelle Thrasher to make sure personnel policies and procedures are followed.
