Big New Year’s celebration planned for Winder

The Barrow County Historical Society will be hosting a New Year’s Eve “Jug Drop” at the Barrow County Museum.

Modeled after the New York apple drop and the Atlanta peach drop, the “Jug Drop” pays homage to Winder’s Jug Tavern roots.

As participants ring in 2010, the “Jug” will be dropped from the top of the hanging tower at the old jail which now serves as a museum.

Barrow County’s legendary monster, The Wog, will also make an appearance during the festivities.

Local merchants will be on hand selling food and other merchandise. The event will also feature free drawings for gifts from local businesses.

Other activities include live music, dancing and a “Miss Jug” contest in which local men will compete to see who makes the prettiest and most talented “woman.”

The Barrow County Historical Society will be offering special refreshments including Nodoroc Mud (hot chocolate) and Wog Nog (special apple cider).

The event will be held Thursday, December 31 from 8 p.m. to midnight at the Barrow County Museum located at 74 West Athens Street in Winder.

Thanks for the laugh Anon!! You cracked me up on that! Wonder who came up with the idea of having a woman impersonator contest, Monster Wog appearance and a hanging tower Jug drop for New Years Eve celebration? Sounds more like Halloween stuff to me.

This will be an alcohol free event - it is on county property & law enforcement will be on hand to take care of any potential problems. This is a family friendly event to raise awareness of the museum, a community asset that is FREE to visit. The December feature display will have a huge whiskey still on loan from the North Georgia Mountain Fair as well as pictures of our former Sheriffs & their families that lived in the building.

Oh that's a good one - Family friendly and hugh whiskey still. Look boys and girls, this county was once called Jug Tavern because it was famous for moonshine and here is a sample of the still.

This in a county that just fired a teacher for having a picture of her holding a glass of wine while on holiday in Europe.

This whole event sounds like a stretch to me. I hope there's no city or county money being spent on these festivities, as there is surely better things to spend public funds on. And, on New Year's Eve there's probably plenty of problems for law enforcement to keep busy with. Will county funds be spent on extra officers to "be on hand" at this event? I hope not. It's a waste.

Too bad we can't just be grateful that there is something fun to do that is free. I don't know about you, but I need to save my money and this sounds like it may have a little something for everyone. Don't be so cynical and enjoy, you might actually have fun.

This sounds like a good, fun time. And we won't have to travel to another town to enjoy. I love it!
