Winder announces poetry contest winners
The contest was held during April, the designated National Poetry Month.
Fourteen adults and 97 children submitted entries for this year’s competition. Poet and Author Dana Wildsmith and Barrow County News editor LeAnne Akin reviewed all entries and chose seven for recognition.
In the adult division, Margaret Loggins was awarded first place honors for her poem entitled “Books in Heaven.” Kim Shupenia (“Winder is Opportunity”) and Dru Jiles Hatcher (“Solice”) tied for second place.
Maria Araceli Alvarado finished third with her poem “I want to be your friend.”
Michelle Tippens was the top poet in the youth division. Tippens won first place with her poem entitled “Night.”
Second place was awarded to Kristy Evans for her poem “The wind is blowing”. Ronald Coleman finished third with his work of poetry titled “Blue.”
The Winder Friends of the Library will host a poetry reception on Monday, May 19. The reception, an annual event, will begin at 7 p.m. at Piedmont Regional Library.
